On August 17, 2024, a group of students gathered at Dhaka University’s Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture to advocate for justice in response to the recent rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, India. The protest, called “Occupy the Night,” aimed to raise awareness about the need for equal rights and opportunities for women in Bangladesh.

The students held up impactful placards, highlighting the absence of women-friendly policies in both India and Bangladesh despite decades of independence. The speakers stressed the necessity of implementing laws that guarantee equal rights and opportunities for women, shedding light on the alarming fact that many rape cases in Bangladesh remain unreported or unresolved.
