Marching for Identity: Demanding Rights for Indigenous Peoples

Thousands of indigenous students staged a demonstration and rally on Wednesday (18 September 2024) in Khagrachari district town demanding a democratic environment in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

– The protesters sought recognition of indigenous people’s rights, immediate implementation of the Hill District Peace Accord, and constitutional recognition of indigenous identities.

– They criticized the previous government for perpetuating brotherly conflicts, embezzlement, and silencing people’s voices.

– The protesters demanded reorganization of the district council through elections instead of selection.

– Other demands included stopping embezzlement, addressing murders and abductions, protecting indigenous rights, and ensuring accountability and transparency.

– The rally featured speeches by representatives from the Anti-Conflict and Discrimination Indigenous Students Movement.

– A memorandum outlining the eight-point demand was submitted to the chief adviser through the deputy commissioner.

– The demonstration aimed to highlight the struggles of indigenous people and demand justice and recognition of their rights.
