The Business Standard recently published a story on September 29, 2024, highlighting the heroic efforts of Priya, a leader in the Hijra community, and her team during the violence at Dhaka University in July 2023. Despite facing initial resistance, Priya and her team volunteered at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, providing critical support amidst a severe staff shortage. They helped carry the wounded, arranged medicine and blood, and organized a blood donation campaign, collecting 730 bags. The community also raised Tk3 lakh for relief efforts and fought exploitation from ambulance syndicates. Priya recounts the traumatic experience, including witnessing gunshot wounds and carrying dying individuals. The Hijra community’s involvement continued during the flood crisis in August, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to helping others despite being one of Bangladesh’s most marginalized groups.
