100th rape celebration? Yes, you heard it right!
The 1999 Jahangirnagar University Anti-Rape Movement was a student-led protest in Bangladesh sparked by Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Jasimuddin Manik’s alleged celebration of his group’s 100th rape in 1998. Female students, supported by teachers and peers, demanded Manik’s expulsion, prosecution, and campus security reforms. Despite clashes with Chhatra League activists and intimidation, the protests continued for over a year, culminating in Manik’s expulsion and arrest on August 2, 1999. The movement achieved significant reforms, including removal of armed cadres, establishment of a sexual harassment complaint cell, and increased security. It remains a landmark event in Bangladesh’s struggle against sexual violence and campus activism, inspiring future protests and movements.
