Happy Birthday, Khushi Kabir!
Khushi Kabir is a trailblazing Bangladeshi feminist, activist, and development leader who has dedicated her life to empowering marginalized communities. As the Coordinator of Nijera Kori, she has worked tirelessly to promote collective action and self-reliance among landless rural communities.
A vocal advocate for gender equality, environmental justice, and secularism, Khushi has fought for the rights of women, peasants, and indigenous communities, emphasizing grassroots leadership, ecological sustainability, and democracy. Her work addresses systemic inequalities and challenges intolerance and extremism, inspiring generations of activists in Bangladesh and beyond.
Khushi’s remarkable journey began after Bangladesh’s liberation in 1972 when she joined one of the country’s first NGOs, working with rural marginalized communities. In 1980, she joined Nijera Kori, which has grown into a national-level NGO working with over 237,787 rural women and men in 1366 villages.
Throughout her career, Khushi has received numerous awards and recognition for her tireless work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Her legacy continues to inspire, and her commitment to creating a more just and equitable society remains unwavering.
