The tragic death of 21-year-old college student Mosarat Jahan Munia in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has sparked a prolonged and contentious legal battle. On April 26, 2021, Munia’s body was discovered in her apartment, leading her sister, Nusrita Jahan Tania, to accuse Basundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir of instigating Munia’s suicide.

Tania filed a case against Anvir, which was later followed by another case in September 2021, alleging rape and murder against Anvir and seven others, including Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan. Despite investigations by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), all accused were cleared of charges.

The Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 accepted the PBI’s report on March 20, 2024, officially acquitting Anvir and the others. This decision was met with public outcry and dissatisfaction from Munia’s family, who claimed that the investigations were compromised due to bribery and undue influence.

Munia’s family demanded a reinvestigation in August 2024, calling for the arrest and interrogation of the accused. The High Court agreed to hear the case again in September 2024, offering hope for a revival of legal proceedings.

As of January 2025, the case remains unresolved, highlighting concerns about the integrity of the judicial process and the struggle for justice in cases involving influential individuals.
