Bangladeshi film actress Porimoni was reportedly pressured by Hefazat-e-Islam to cancel her attendance at a showroom opening ceremony in Tangail. The showroom owner had run a week-long promotional campaign announcing her arrival. However, religious groups, including Hefazat-e-Islam, organized protests against her presence in the town. As a result, the showroom owner was forced to cancel the event.
Later, Porimoni expressed her frustration over the incident in a social media post, calling it humiliating. Just hours after her post went viral, an arrest warrant was issued against her for failing to appear in court. The case, filed in 2022, accused her of assault and issuing death threats against a complainant.
In a similar incident in November, another television star, Mehazabin Chowdhury, was forced to skip an opening ceremony in Chittagong following protests from Islamic groups. These recurring incidents highlight the authorities’ indifference towards such issues and raise critical questions about the growing hostility and lack of freedom faced by female media personalities in Bangladesh.
