Preeti Urang, a 15-year-old domestic worker, tragically died on February 6, 2024, after falling from the eighth-floor apartment of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, the then Executive Editor of The Daily Star, in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. What makes this incident even more alarming is that just six months prior, another young domestic worker had fallen from the same apartment, sustaining severe injuries.
Preeti’s father filed a case alleging negligence led to her death, and Ashfaqul Haque and his wife, Tania Khondoker, were arrested and denied bail multiple times. However, in June 2024, the High Court granted bail to Ashfaqul.
The case has sparked widespread concern among eminent citizens and human rights activists, who are demanding an impartial investigation. They’re highlighting the suspicious nature of the repeated incidents and emphasizing the need for justice. As of now, the case remains under investigation, with rights groups continuing to push for a fair and transparent inquiry to ensure accountability and justice for Preeti.
