Thirteen years have passed since the harrowing murder of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, yet justice continues to evade those seeking it as fresh investigative leads emerge. Although authorities have provided constant reassurances, the case remains unresolved, exacerbating public frustration and doubt.
Recent reports reveal that a special task force established by the Home Ministry has discovered indications of significant political interference in the investigation. Detainees connected to the case have allegedly pointed fingers at officials from the former Awami League government, prompting worries that intentional actions were taken to mislead the inquiry and hinder justice. The task force is anticipated to present its report by April 4, 2025, which could provide the long-awaited clarity.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, highlighted the government’s dedication to addressing the case. While she recognized the extended delay, she reassured that law enforcement agencies are actively working to achieve justice.
Despite this, journalists and rights activists remain skeptical, asserting that the case has faced years of political manipulation and neglect. The recent initiative for an investigation by the current interim government has ignited cautious optimism that the truth might eventually come to light.
As the April deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the investigation, with demands growing for an independent and transparent process that delivers long-overdue justice for Sagar and Runi.
