JUSTICE FOR CHATTOGRAM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: Investigate Mob Attack & Proctorial Body’s Inaction, Ensure Fair Punishment
On the night of February 5th, a group of male agitators from Chattogram University stormed the Sheikh Hasina Hall, a female dormitory, with the intention of destroying the “Boat” sculpture, a symbol of the previous autocratic regime. Due to security concerns, female students exited the dormitory and attempted to stop the mob that had gathered outside. Some male students began taking pictures and videos of the female students, chanting derogatory slogans.
Journalists and the proctorial body arrived at the scene, resulting in a chaotic four-way clash between the agitators, female students, journalists, and the proctorial body. Physical violence ensued, with some female students reportedly engaging in self-defense.
On February 14th, ten female students were suspended from the university – one permanently and the others for two years. However, no action was taken against the mob that instigated the disturbance.
Bangladesh Feminist Archives believes that a proper investigation into the incident was not conducted, and the proctorial body is taking a biased stance by ignoring the root cause of the event. One of the proctors even resorted to slut-shaming, calling protesting students “honey-trapped” and posting other sexist remarks.
Bangladesh Feminist Archives demands a thorough investigation into the incident and justice for all parties involved. The role of the agitators and the proctorial body’s inaction must be questioned. The female students deserve proper justice, but only after a thorough investigation into the events.
