There is no doubt about the alarming surge in sexual violence that has been occurring in Bangladesh over the past few months. The increasing frequency of these gruesome cases is not only shameful for our society but also a stain that is hard to erase. It exposes the deeply ingrained gender inequality women face, the sheer disrespect for their rights, and the systematic invalidation of their experiences.
This should serve as a severe reminder of the countless failures of our system in ensuring safety and justice for women, children, and marginalized communities. Bangladesh Feminist Archives (BFA) is deeply concerned and alarmed by the glaring violation of human rights, particularly those of women and other vulnerable groups.
Recent statistics indicate 271 cases of violence against women and children in January 2025, which is 30 more than in December 2024 alone. This number does not even account for cases dismissed due to lack of evidence, systematic bias, legal loopholes, or the fact that marital rape remains unrecognized in Bangladesh. The stigma surrounding sexual violence prevents many survivors from reporting their experiences. Cases in February 2025, such as “Molestation in a Moving Bus,” “Gang-Rape of a Housewife,” “Madrasa Student Raped,” and “Man Rapes Two Disabled Minor Sisters,” are not just headlines—they are the shattered lives of real people. These cases represent a society that has continuously failed to protect its most vulnerable.
BFA strongly condemns the rise in sexual violence and demands immediate action and a response from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, other government bodies, the justice system, law enforcement agencies (Police, RAB), and policymakers for the “New Bangladesh.” It is intolerable that survivors still face intense social stigma, which discourages them from reporting their cases. This is further exacerbated by barriers within our justice system, such as authorities dismissing survivors’ perspectives, delayed investigations, lack of enforcement, and a failure to show empathy toward victims.
BFA demands:
- Recognition for victims and increased mainstream attention to raise public awareness.
- Nationwide campaigns promoting positive messaging for survivors to reduce stigma and encourage them to come forward.
- Stronger safety measures, accessible legal support, and, most importantly, swift justice for victims of sexual violence.
Now, more than ever, we must take action. We must open our eyes and ears to the suffering around us. Together, let’s build a society where no one has to live in fear of violence.
