On Monday, February 24, 2025, at around 10 pm, a rape accused, Shahnewaz Abir Raju (30), escaped from police custody while handcuffed after attacking officers in Roumari Upazila of Kurigram.
- Raju’s mother, Abeda Akhter Razia (48), and cousin, Runa Akhter (23), were arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, on charges of obstructing government work.
- Raju is accused of raping a disabled schoolgirl and dealing drugs. He was arrested on Monday night by a three-member police team led by SI Awal Hossain.
- During the arrest, Raju’s family members attacked the police, injuring SI Awal Hossain. Raju escaped with handcuffs during the chaos.
- The incident occurred in the Dhanarchar Charergram area of Ward No. 4 of Jadurchar Union in Roumari Upazila.
- The police searched the house and recovered a ramda (a type of sharp weapon).
- SI Awal Hossain is undergoing treatment at Roumari Upazila Health Complex, and his condition is not serious.
- Efforts are ongoing to arrest the absconding Raju, who remains at large.
- Raju’s family had fled their home in Kashiabari village after he was accused of rape on February 17, 2025, and had taken shelter in Dhanarchar Charergram.
