A commotion broke out near NHA Tower in Lalmatia around 5:30 pm on March 1 when a 60-year-old man asked two 20-year-old girls to leave a footpath where they were sitting.
– The girls, customers at a nearby tea stall, refused to move, leading to a verbal altercation with the elderly man, who allegedly shouted expletives and grabbed one of the women’s hair.
– One of the women threw tea at the man, and a crowd gathered, berating and physically assaulting the women and two passersby who tried to help.
– The elderly man claimed the girls were smoking marijuana, but they denied this, saying they were only smoking cigarettes.
– Police arrived and took the women to Mohammadpur Police Station, where the matter was resolved after discussions with both parties.
– The women were released into their families’ custody around 11:30 pm.
– The women claimed that the police were unable to subdue the mob, and that their phones were taken and a live Facebook video deleted.
– According to the women, they were slapped, punched, and videotaped by the mob, which consisted of around 10-12 men.
– The women had called 999 for help before the police arrived.
