Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has requested the media to avoid using the word “rape” and instead use terms like “women’s oppression” or “oppression,” arguing that such words are unpleasant to hear. He made this statement at the launch of the Help app, designed to enhance women’s safety in public transport, organized by the Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC) and Switch Bangladesh Foundation.
He also urged the media to reduce coverage of incidents that create public fear, citing a robbery case that was repeatedly broadcast. The DMP Commissioner announced that complaints received through the Help app would be treated as preliminary complaints or FIRs, eliminating the need for victims to visit police stations. Additionally, he suggested holding discussions with labor leaders and bus owners to address harassment in public transport.
The event was attended by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Fawzia Moslem, BJC Chairman Rejoanul Haque, and other key stakeholders.
