Bangladesh to Amend Rape Laws, broaden Definition of Rape and Establish special Tribunals

The interim government plans to amend the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000 to establish special tribunals for child rape cases.

– The amended act is expected to be finalized on Thursday and published in the gazette as soon as possible.

– Rape incidents involving consent obtained through false promises of marriage will be considered a separate offense.

– The trial and investigation time for rape cases without consent will be reduced.

– The definition of rape has been broadened to include any object used for sexual abuse.

– Trials can now proceed without DNA reports, using medical and circumstantial evidence instead.

– Victim protection and compensation have been incorporated into the law.

– The Magura girl rape and murder case trial will be held speedily, with the investigation concluding soon and the trial beginning within a few days.
