We at Bangladesh Feminist Archives are deeply saddened by the passing of Sanjida Khatun, an iconic figure whose contributions to the cultural and feminist movements in Bangladesh remain immeasurable. Born in 1933, Sanjida Apa dedicated her life to the revival, preservation, and promotion of Bangla music, literature, and feminist ideals. As a distinguished academic and musicologist, she profoundly influenced the cultural landscape of Bangladesh.
As co-founder and president of Chhayanaut, Sanjida Apa was instrumental in preserving and nurturing Bengali cultural heritage, particularly Rabindra Sangeet. Her courageous efforts in organizing cultural resistance against oppression, including the historic Pohela Boishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul during periods of political unrest, positioned her as a leading voice in cultural activism and feminist advocacy.
Her unwavering commitment has opened pathways for countless individuals, particularly women, to reclaim their voices and heritage through art and activism. Her spirit of resistance and advocacy for cultural integrity continues to inspire our work at the archives.
Today, we celebrate her life, honor her memory, and pledge to uphold her vision of an inclusive, culturally vibrant, and feminist Bangladesh.
Rest in power, Sanjida Apa. Your voice echoes through every story we preserve.
