Over 200 rape cases in 7 months: Dhaka sees alarming rise in sexual violence, many perpetrators still at large

Between August 1, 2024, and March 15, 2025, Dhaka Metropolitan area recorded 216 rape cases, 17 gang rape cases, and 27 attempted rape cases.

– A 60+ year-old woman was gang-raped near Ramna Kali Temple on September 6, 2024; no arrests have been made even after 7.5 months.

– A 21-year-old woman in Turag was gang-raped by 3 men on November 29, 2024; police arrested 1, who gave a confession, while 2 others remain at large.

– An eighth-grade girl went missing on January 16, 2025; her body was found on February 2. She was raped and murdered by 5 men; 2 were arrested, 3 are still missing.

– A 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by 5 men in Kadamtali on January 20; 3 were arrested, 2 are still not caught.

– Gang rape cases were filed in various police stations: 2 each in Turag, Kadamtali, Jatrabari, and Demra; 1 each in Kamrangirchar, Lalbagh, Banani, Mohammadpur, Pallabi, Bhashantek, Kafrul, Shah Ali, and Darus Salam.

– Victims include young girls, garment workers, housewives, and elderly women, with ongoing concerns over slow investigations and lack of full justice, as many accused are still not arrested.
