A 22-year-old Marma woman has come forward with allegations of being repeatedly raped by 25-year-old Md. Fahim in Kaukhali, Rangamati, between March 25 and April 3, 2025. As she undergoes medical treatment, the investigation is ongoing. However, concerns have arisen over law enforcement’s response to protests against the alleged rapist.

The Bangladesh Marma Student Council (BMSC) had planned protests in Rangamati and Khagrachari, but reportedly faced obstacles from law enforcement. This raises questions about the right to assemble and protest, protected under Article 37 of the Bangladeshi Constitution.

Citizens, including those in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, have the fundamental right to peaceful assembly and protest. In light of rising atrocities against women, particularly indigenous women who often face inadequate media coverage, such protests serve as a crucial means to demand justice.

We urge law enforcement agencies to respect the right to peaceful protest and ensure that the voices of the marginalized are heard. The victim deserves justice, and it’s essential that her case receives the attention it warrants.
