How many suicides will it take to ensure justice?

Lamia (17), daughter of July Martyr Jashim Uddin, committed suicide on April 26, 2025. She was allegedly raped by two men, Sakib Munshi and Sifat Munshi, during her visit to her father’s grave in Pangashia Village, Dumki, Patuakhali, on March 18, 2025. Although Sakib Munshi was arrested and a case was filed, he was recently granted bail. Lamia’s family and community believe her suicide may have been a result of the disappointment and frustration of not getting justice.

This incident echoes the tragic case of Abontika Sruti, a Jagannath University student who also took her own life under similar circumstances. The pattern of victim-blaming and lack of accountability is alarming. The Bangladesh Feminist Archives demands justice for Lamia and urges the government to take concrete actions to ensure women’s safety and hold perpetrators accountable.
