Dr. Tasnim Jara, currently a Joint Member-Secretary of the National Citizens’ Party, recently faced a legal issue. She and fellow doctor Jahangir Kabir received a legal notice on April 25, 2025, from Barrister Mohammad Humayun Pallab, representing the Law and Life Foundation Trust. The notice accused them of spreading pornographic and obscene content on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, as well as selling sexually stimulating medicines. However, the content in question was actually Dr. Jara’s sex education material. Two days later, on April 27, the notice was withdrawn after Dr. Jara provided explanations through her verified Facebook page, satisfying the notice’s issuers.
Despite the notice being withdrawn, this incident highlights the ongoing stigma surrounding sex education in Bangladesh, which Dr. Jara has faced recently. Given the rising number of sexual assault cases, it’s crucial for the general public, especially the educated section, to understand basic concepts like consent, bodily autonomy, and safer sexual practices. Dr. Jara’s content aimed to spread these concepts, and given the younger generation’s familiarity with social media, such content can be an effective way to reach them. Bangladesh Feminist Archives stands in support of Dr. Jara’s efforts as an educator.
