The last 19 years, 65% of DNA tests have been conducted in rape cases, highlighting the importance of DNA testing in ensuring justice.
– A discussion meeting was organized by the DNA Laboratory Management Directorate of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs on the occasion of World DNA Day.
– The meeting emphasized the importance of DNA testing in protecting women’s rights, assisting law enforcement agencies, preventing human trafficking, and ensuring justice.
– Speakers expressed concern that the new ordinance removes mandatory DNA testing in rape cases, which was previously made mandatory through an amendment to the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act in 2020.
– The National Forensic DNA Profiling Laboratory (NFDPL) received around 35,000 samples from 10,845 cases from 2006 to March 2025, with 65% of reports related to rape cases.
– Experts recommended integrating NFDPL with relevant ministries, assimilating technically skilled workforce, and including it in the revenue budget to improve DNA testing.
– They also emphasized the need for skilled manpower, improved technical standards, and sending DNA reports to doctors and police to expedite the justice process.
– The meeting was attended by Advisor Sharmeen S. Murshid, Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher, and other officials, who highlighted the importance of DNA testing in ensuring justice and solving cases quickly.
