A Union Parishad (UP) chairman in Chauddagram, Comilla, Md. Abu Taher, has been suspended for issuing birth certificates to two Rohingya women.

The women, Humaira and Sharmin Akhtar, used the birth certificates to try to obtain national identity cards and passports to travel to Vietnam.

They were detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and a case was filed against them.

The UP chairman claims he is not involved and was made a witness in the charge sheet, but was still suspended by the Local Government Department.

The suspension was confirmed through a notification signed by the Senior Assistant Secretary of the Local Government Ministry.
