A case has been filed in Bogra after rickshaw puller Shakil Mia was beaten to death on Saturday evening for reportedly refusing to marry off his school-going daughter to a local political leader. The main accused, Jitu Islam (43), Joint General Secretary of the Bogra District Volunteer Party, and 17 others have been named in the case, along with 8–10 unidentified individuals.
Shakil’s wife, Maleka Begum, filed the case at Bogra Sadar Police Station on Sunday. Police have arrested Jitu Islam and two of his associates, Shafiqul Hasan (28) and Matiur Rahman, while others remain at large.
According to the case statement, Jitu pressured Shakil to agree to the marriage, and upon refusal, orchestrated the fatal attack near the Karatoya River ghat in Fulbari Madhyapara. Following public outrage, the Volunteer Party’s central leadership expelled Jitu Islam for “tarnishing the organization’s image.”
Police investigations are ongoing.
