A recent report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UNFPA highlights the widespread violence faced by women in Bangladesh, particularly within intimate relationships. Nearly 76% of women have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime, and 49% in the past year alone. The violence includes physical, sexual, psychological, economic abuse, and controlling behavior.
Despite this, most women remain silent—64% do not report the abuse, often due to fear of losing family honor, concern for children, or the normalization of violence. Only 7% pursue legal action, and many are unaware of where to seek help. Even when cases are filed, justice is rare: 97% of accused in Dhaka’s tribunals were released or acquitted, according to earlier Prothom Alo investigations.
The economic burden of seeking justice and healthcare is also significant. On average, medical costs per victim are around 2,500 taka, and legal costs over 4,000 taka. Victims often shoulder these expenses themselves. Experts stress the need for strong legal support, community awareness, and systemic reform to address and prevent gender-based violence.
