A 19-year-old woman from Dhaka has filed a case under the Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Act, accusing her parents of ongoing physical and emotional abuse. The student, currently enrolled in an English-medium ‘A’ level program in Mohammadpur, claims her mother and father have been interfering in her personal freedom and subjecting her to repeated violence.

Following her petition, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam summoned the parents to appear in court this Sunday. The woman’s father is a former director of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

According to the complaint, on May 25, the parents allegedly physically assaulted her and used obscene language, causing bodily injury. She also stated that despite being an adult, she is denied access to basic family resources and is regularly subjected to verbal abuse, intimidation, and restrictions on her autonomy.

Speaking to reporters, the young woman said, “My mother and father tortured me. I want a better life. I have come to court to get justice.”

Her lawyer, Isfaqur Rahman Ghalib, confirmed that the court has recorded her statement and taken steps to proceed with the case.
