Monira Akhter Meem, a 22-year-old housewife from Magura Sadar upazila, was allegedly beaten and suffocated to death by her husband Shamim Sheikh and his family over dowry demands. The incident took place on Wednesday after an argument about unpaid money Monira had brought from her family home. Her family alleges that she was murdered during the altercation and her body was later abandoned at the hospital under the false pretense of suicide.

Monira’s brother Riju Sheikh has filed a case with Magura Sadar Police Station, accusing five individuals, including her husband. Police have confirmed that one person has been arrested and an autopsy is underway. The couple had been married for five years and shared a young child. Monira’s family stated that she had previously been physically abused, with past incidents resolved informally through family mediation.
