Neela Rani (44), a resident of Manipur village in Bochaganj upazila, Dinajpur, was severely beaten by neighbors due to a long-standing dispute. The attack, which took place last Wednesday near the local mosque, left her with a broken tooth and serious injuries, including five stitches above her eyebrow. A video of the assault quickly went viral on social media, prompting public outrage.
According to the case filed by her son that evening, four individuals, Babul Islam, Shariful Islam, Tariqul Islam, and Munna Islam, ambushed Neela Rani, attacked her with sticks and country-made weapons, and later assaulted her again when she attempted to file a police complaint. Neela’s injuries required her transfer from the Upazila Health Complex to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Police arrested one of the accused, Babul Islam, who was later granted bail by the court. Officials stated that a case was filed under multiple sections, including attempted murder (Section 307).
Local residents organized a human chain protest at the Bochaganj Press Club under the banner of Conscious Citizens, demanding justice and protection for Neela’s family. Protesters alleged that the family is now facing threats and intimidation. Authorities have launched a two-member investigation committee, led by the Assistant Commissioner (Land), to probe the incident further. Calls for accountability and protection continue to grow amid fears of impunity and ongoing harassment.
