Chittagong University has come under fire after reports surfaced of a strict 10 PM curfew imposed on female dormitory residents, with warnings that failure to comply could result in seat cancellation. The issue gained attention after an assistant proctor allegedly threatened students near the dorm areas late at night, demanding they return to their halls before the deadline or risk losing their accommodations.
The move sparked immediate backlash on social media, where students condemned the policy as discriminatory and misogynistic. Protesters argued that the rule unfairly targets women and ignores real-life scenarios, such as returning from tuition jobs, part-time work, or other valid engagements, that may lead to late arrivals. Many emphasized that instead of restricting women’s movement, the administration should prioritize campus safety and infrastructure improvements.
In response, hall authorities stated that the 10 PM curfew has long been in place and is intended to maintain discipline and ensure safety, particularly in areas of campus that are poorly lit and known for drug-related activity. However, students continue to demand a more gender-equitable policy and a shift away from punitive measures that disproportionately affect female students.
