In Kushtia’s Bheramara upazila, five men have been arrested and sent to jail on charges of gang-raping a woman after restraining and beating her husband late Saturday night.
The attack occurred around 11:00 PM near a litchi orchard in the Baro Mile area as the couple was returning home from work in a rickshaw van. The assailants intercepted the van, assaulted the husband, and dragged the woman into the orchard, where 3–4 of them raped her.
The accused have been identified as Kalu Pramanik (46), Murshid Sheikh (45), Titu Mondal alias Tipu (42), Ejazul (42), and van driver Rubel Ali (24). According to Kushtia Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman, the arrests were made during overnight raids conducted by Bheramara police and the Detective Branch after the victim called the national emergency hotline 999 to report the rape.
Additional SP Foisal Ahmed said the suspects have been charged under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act of 2000. Bheramara Police Station OC Abdur Rob stated that their confessional statements have been recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The victim is currently receiving medical treatment.
