Marufa Akhter, a 45-year-old textile worker from Idrabpur village in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila, was burned to death in her home at around 3:30 AM on August 3.
Neighbors, noticing smoke coming from the house, rushed to the scene and found the door locked from the outside. After breaking it open, they discovered Marufa’s charred body inside. Her husband, Md Mizanur Rahman, has been named the prime suspect and is currently in hiding.
According to the victim’s younger sister, Kulsum Akhter, Marufa endured regular domestic abuse. She alleged that Mizanur beat her for not providing him with money and had confined her inside the house for an entire week before the incident. Kulsum further claimed that at around 3:00 AM on the day of the murder, Mizanur set the furniture on fire, locked Marufa inside, and fled.
Sreepur Police Station Inspector Shamim Akhter stated that initial investigations indicate the woman was murdered by her husband. The suspect remains at large, and efforts are underway to arrest him. The case has not yet been formally filed.
