On August 31, 2025, clashes broke out at Chittagong University (CU) after a female student was allegedly assaulted by a doorman at a residential building near Gate No. 2 of the university. The student said the doorman refused to open the gate, verbally abused her, and then slapped and kicked her when she protested. When her roommates tried to intervene, locals became involved, leading to a violent confrontation.
The situation escalated the following day when locals attacked students near Gate No. 2 with bricks and stones, injuring at least 50 people, including CU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Uddin and Proctor Professor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif. Students attempted to resist the attack but were repeatedly forced to retreat due to the larger number of locals. Members of the university’s proctorial body were also injured.
Following the clashes, the university authorities postponed all examinations scheduled for the day. Professor Kamal Uddin confirmed that many of the injured students had exams, prompting the suspension. Students said they had seen army personnel on campus earlier in the morning, but fighting resumed once they left.
While the university administration has initiated measures to resolve the matter, students expressed frustration that no effective solution has been reached. They have demanded a fair and transparent resolution to ensure the safety of students on campus.
