Bangladesh Garments Workers’ Solidarity held a rally in front of the National Press Club on Friday (September 5) protesting the deaths of workers in Nilphamari and demanding democratic labor laws in line with the July Charter. Speakers condemned the killing of workers by law enforcement during protests over unpaid wages and layoffs at Evergreen company in Nilphamari EPZ, calling it “heinous” and demanding police reforms, restrictions on the use of inhuman weapons, a speedy investigation, trial, and proper compensation for victims’ families.

Leaders criticized the government for failing to complete amendments to the labor law despite the Labor Reform Commission and National Tripartite Council (NTCC) working on it since November, after the mass uprising. They also expressed anger at the exclusion of several commissions, including the Labor Reform Commission and Women’s Commission, from the consensus process. Speakers stressed that the July Charter must guarantee workers’ rights, including freedom of expression, union registration, and collective bargaining.

Garments Workers’ Solidarity president Taslima Akhtar placed 10 urgent demands before the interim government, including trials and compensation for factory disasters such as Rana Plaza and Tazreen, six months’ paid maternity leave and paternity leave, a National Minimum Wage Commission, amendments to strengthen use of welfare funds, protection of workers’ history through memorials and education, and a stronger online labor complaint system. The rally, moderated by Central General Secretary Mizanur Rahim Chowdhury, was addressed by leaders from labor, student, and women’s groups, including Abul Hasan Rubel of the Mass Solidarity Movement. Afterward, participants marched in procession around the Paltan area carrying protest placards.
