A protest took place at the Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday afternoon, September 20, 2025, where demonstrators burned an effigy of Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) faculty member Saroar Hossain.

The program, which began around 4 PM, was attended by people. Organizers identified Hossain as a “misogynist, supporter of Israel, and an overzealous homophobe and transphobe.”

At the protest, young activist and expelled Metropolitan University student Sahara Chowdhury delivered a speech criticizing Hossain’s reported comments on sanitary napkins, gender, and sexuality. Chowdhury accused him of promoting patriarchal and exploitative systems that treat women as “machines for reproduction” and marginalize LGBT communities.

Photos from the protest and the full speech were circulated by the organizers after the event, who said prior announcement had not been made due to fears of disruption by hostile groups.
