A woman in Hujrapur village of Rahanpur municipality, under Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabganj, was publicly humiliated and attacked by a local mob on Saturday night (October 11) on accusations of so-called “anti-social activities.”

According to police, the attackers tied a shoelace around her neck, cut off her hair, and later set fire to her house, destroying furniture, doors, windows, and a motorcycle. A video of the incident, which circulated on social media Sunday night, has sparked outrage.

Law enforcement officials said locals stormed the woman’s home, dragged her out to the street, and assaulted her before setting the house ablaze. Police and fire service personnel arrived on the scene and brought the situation under control.

“The local mob attacked, vandalized, and set fire to the woman’s house. Later, they tied a chain of shoes around her neck and cut her hair,” said Additional Superintendent of Police ANM Wasim Firoz.

Gomostapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wadud Alam confirmed that the woman was rescued and later handed over to her family. She has since filed a case as the complainant. Police have named 10 individuals and listed 10 others unidentified in connection with the attack.

Authorities say an investigation is underway into the assault and arson.
