Tamanna Mahbub, a fourth-year student of the English Department at Chittagong University, has made history by becoming the only female winner in the recently held Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections. Competing against 13 other contenders, she was elected Co-Sports Secretary, standing out as the sole woman candidate for the position.
A member of the Students’ Federation, Tamanna contested the election under the “Binirman Chattar Oikya” panel, which was supported by the Students’ Federation and the Students’ Alliance for Democracy. While Islami Chhatra Shibir secured 24 of the 26 posts and Chhatra Dal won one, Tamanna emerged as the only elected representative outside these dominant groups—marking a powerful moment for women’s representation and independent student leadership on campus.
Tamanna’s connection to athletics runs deep. From her college days, she has excelled in running, discus throwing, and long jump—earning individual championship titles before joining university. Since then, she has represented Chittagong University in inter-university handball and volleyball tournaments, national women’s competitions, and long-distance marathons across the country. She currently holds the title of “Fastest Human Being” at Chittagong University.
After her victory, Tamanna said, “Sports are not just my passion—it’s part of my soul. I know the challenges girls face on the field. As Co-Sports Secretary, I want to ensure more women feel encouraged to participate and believe in their own abilities.” She also emphasized expanding access for all genders, noting that “sports build confidence, mental health, and solidarity.”
Expressing gratitude to her organization for their support, Tamanna added that her win represents something larger than herself. “This victory belongs to every girl who hesitates to step forward,” she said. “I want them to see that when given a chance, women can lead, excel, and transform the field.”
