Police have arrested a man after a video showing him harassing and verbally abusing a woman over her clothing went viral on social media. The accused, 24-year-old Mohin Majumdar Islam, was detained and is currently being held at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka. Law enforcement officials confirmed that legal action is being taken against him.
In a post on its verified Facebook page, Bangladesh Police said the country’s diversity in religion, culture, and personal taste is reflected in people’s clothing choices. The statement added, “If anyone finds someone’s attire offensive, they can file an appropriate complaint. However, attacking or harassing someone over their choice of clothing is a punishable offence.”
Police also reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety, dignity, and respect for all individuals. The post drew hundreds of reactions within hours, with many social media users commending the prompt arrest.
Some commenters, however, expressed skepticism about follow-through, recalling previous incidents where offenders were treated leniently after release. One wrote, “We are waiting with flowers to greet him as soon as you release him.”
