Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami have alleged that BNP activists attacked several of their female workers in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, leaving multiple people injured. The Maheshpur Upazila Jamaat held a press conference on Sunday (October 19), demanding immediate arrests and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Speaking at the press conference, Jamaat’s Central Majlish-e-Shura member Professor Matiar Rahman, District Assistant Secretary Abdul Hai, Upazila Ameer Faruk Ahmed, and Municipal Ameer Palash Ahmed claimed that the attack took place around 10 a.m. in Uttar Para, Jadavpur Union, while female Jamaat workers were engaged in mass contact and campaign activities. According to their written statement, a group of 10–12 men, allegedly led by local BNP leaders Ashraful, Hanif, Shahin, and Sabuj, attacked the women with sticks, injuring eight people, including five women. Some of the injured were allegedly stripped of their burqas and humiliated. The injured are now receiving treatment at Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex.
Jamaat leaders strongly condemned the assault and warned of tougher programs if the perpetrators are not brought to justice. “BNP workers attacked our women when they went to seek votes and humiliated them. We are preparing to file a case,” said Upazila Jamaat Ameer Professor Faruk Ahmed.
Responding to the allegations, Maheshpur Upazila BNP President Mehedi Hasan Roni denied any organized attack, saying, “Jamaat’s women workers were campaigning, and I heard there was a small scuffle with locals. There was no beating or violence.” He added that if Jamaat files a complaint, the matter should proceed legally.
Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam confirmed awareness of the incident but said no formal complaint had yet been filed. “Legal action will be taken after investigation if a complaint is received,” he told Dhaka Post.
