A 19-year-old morgue worker has confessed to raping the body of a young woman at the Mymensingh Medical College morgue, in a case that has shocked the nation for its brutality and rarity.
The accused, Abu Sayeed, a resident of Khandakpara village in Haluaghat upazila, worked as a body carrier for nearly three years. He confessed his crime before Mymensingh Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md. Shariful Haque on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police and medical officials, the body of a 20-year-old honors student from Sherpur Government College was recovered on Sunday night, reportedly a case of suicide. Her body was sent to the morgue on Monday morning for autopsy. Investigators said Sayeed entered the morgue a second time after delivering the body and raped it before the postmortem. The incident came to light when the attending forensic doctor, Dr. ANM Al Mamun, noticed evidence of sexual assault during examination and immediately alerted the police.
Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Abdullah Al Mamun said, “Sayeed admitted during interrogation that he committed the act after leaving the body once and returning later. This is an extremely rare and disturbing crime.” Police have charged him with rape and desecration of a corpse and handed him over to the court.
