A shocking video has surfaced from Sreepur Union in Chauddagram, Comilla, showing a Union Parishad (UP) member tying up and brutally beating a woman accused of an “immoral relationship.” The incident, which took place five days ago, went viral on Tuesday night, sparking outrage.
The accused, Bazlur Rahman, a member of Sreepur UP, is seen in the video striking the woman repeatedly with a stick while she screams and begs for mercy. The assault reportedly took place after villagers detained the woman and a man named Billal Hossain around 1 a.m. on October 16, accusing them of an affair. The next day, under Bazlur Rahman’s supervision, a village arbitration was held where the woman was “divorced” from her expatriate husband and forcibly married to Billal, who already has a wife and four daughters, in exchange for a dowry of Tk 5 lakh.
Locals confirmed that both the woman and Billal were beaten before the so-called mediation took place. The two-minute, fifty-four-second video has since spread widely online, with calls for legal action.
When contacted, Bazlur Rahman admitted to striking the woman but claimed he did so “to calm the situation,” calling the viral video “a political conspiracy.”
Chauddagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hilal Uddin Ahmed said that although the victim has not filed a complaint, police are working to arrest Bazlur Rahman. “Legal action will be taken,” he confirmed.
