A housewife and her child’s tutor were tied to a pole and publicly humiliated by locals in Kalukhali upazila of Rajbari on Friday afternoon, accused of having an extramarital affair. Footage of the incident went viral on social media overnight, drawing widespread outrage.
According to police and local residents, the assault took place when the tutor visited the woman’s home around 4 pm. A group of locals entered the house, forcibly brought the two outside, and tied them to a bamboo pole on the balcony. The tutor, visibly injured, was later sent to the Kalukhali Upazila Health Complex, though police say he has since gone missing.
In the viral videos—one over two minutes long and another lasting more than four minutes—teenagers and men are seen harassing the pair. Some are heard shouting insults, while others are seen pulling off the woman’s headscarf as dozens stood by.
Kalukhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Jahedur Rahman told Prothom Alo that police went to the scene after 4 pm on Friday. “We found the woman but she did not speak. The tutor was sent to the hospital but could not be located later,” he said, adding that no written complaint has been filed yet. “Legal action will be taken once a complaint is received.”
The incident has sparked anger online, with many condemning the vigilante violence and the public humiliation of both individuals.
