A Dhaka court has sentenced Md. Rezaul Karim Reza to death and fined him Tk 20,000 for killing Dr. Jannatul Naeem Siddique, an MBBS doctor, at a residential hotel in Panthapath in 2022. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by Judge Md. Sabbir Fayez of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. As the accused was absent during the verdict, an arrest warrant was issued.
According to case records, Dr. Jannatul and Rezaul checked into the Family Service Apartment hotel identifying themselves as husband and wife. Police recovered Dr. Jannatul’s body from the hotel room on August 10, 2022, following which her father, Shafiqul Alam, filed a case at Kalabagan Police Station.
Rezaul was arrested shortly after the incident and gave a confessional statement on August 13, 2022. He was later granted bail and subsequently absconded. Kalabagan Police Station Inspector Abu Zafar Mohammad Mahfuzul Kabir submitted the charge sheet on December 28, 2023, naming Rezaul as the sole accused.
The court framed charges on March 7, 2024, and the trial proceeded with testimony from 21 witnesses out of the 26 listed in the charge sheet. After reviewing the evidence, the court announced the verdict sentencing Rezaul to death.
Police are currently seeking to locate and arrest the convicted individual.
