A woman jatrashilpi named Rupa, living in Mymensingh Nagar, was assaulted, tied up, her hair cut, and her face smeared with ink on Wednesday. She later filed a case at the Women Police Station, and police arrested one accused, Shah Alam (40), on Thursday night from the Jubilee Ghat area.
According to the investigation officer, the attackers stopped Rupa on the street shortly after police had been in the area to look into a separate case. She was tied, beaten, her hair forcibly cut, and ink was smeared on her face. A video of the incident was recorded and circulated online.
Rupa’s family stated that she had purchased land nearly 15 years ago from the Bastuhara Samayo Samiti, and since then had faced repeated intimidation and alleged extortion attempts. They reported earlier incidents including vandalism of her home and the kidnapping of her minor son in April, which are already under trial.
Police said the assault took place soon after officers had finished inspecting vandalism allegations involving the same parties. Following a call to the emergency hotline 999, police rescued Rupa from the scene. She said she had been tied, assaulted, and humiliated, and demanded justice.
Police confirmed that one suspect is in custody, and an investigation is ongoing.
