Dhaka University Chemistry Department professor Ershad Halim was arrested on Thursday night from his Sheorapara residence after students publicly alleged sexual harassment spanning several years. A victim student later filed a case at Mirpur Model Police Station accusing him of sexual harassment and physical assault. He was produced before court on Friday, where the magistrate denied bail and sent him to jail.
The allegations became public earlier that day, after students began posting accounts on Facebook and holding a press conference at the TSC Journalists’ Association. Students stated that the professor called them to his office and later to his home under academic pretexts, where harassment occurred. One student said he was assaulted multiple times at the teacher’s residence and threatened to stay silent.
Student representatives reported that at least 12 students from different batches have come forward with similar experiences, though they believe the number may be higher. The university has removed the professor from all academic duties and forwarded the complaint to the anti-sexual harassment cell.
Police said the arrest was made following initial evidence and witness statements. During the court hearing, the accused teacher claimed innocence and alleged professional rivalry, which the court rejected. Students have demanded his permanent expulsion from Dhaka University.
