A 20-year-old woman has been hospitalized in Taraganj, Rangpur, after allegedly being beaten by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Baniapara village of Alampur union. The survivor, Aduri Khatun, is currently receiving treatment at the Taraganj Upazila Health Complex.
According to Aduri’s family and several local residents, she married Naimul Islam in 2023, during which her family provided Tk 5 lakh, one bhori of gold, and household items as dowry. After the birth of their daughter last year, relatives said tensions escalated in the household, with Aduri facing ongoing abuse and pressure to bring an additional Tk 1 lakh. The alleged assault took place after she refused to meet the latest demand.
Speaking from the hospital, Aduri said her husband and in-laws assaulted her when she declined to bring more money. She alleged that her husband struck her on the head, and that her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and a nephew also joined in the beating.
Naimul Islam has denied the allegations, claiming instead that Aduri’s relatives intervened in a family dispute and took her away. No formal complaint has yet been filed with the police. Officer-in-Charge MA Faruk of Taraganj Police Station stated that action will be taken if a written complaint is submitted.
