A woman identifying herself as Sohana Akhter has gone missing after filing a murder complaint in Dhaka naming 222 people in connection with the July 2024 killing of Abdul Gani, a computer operator killed during the anti-discrimination student movement. Although Ramna Police Station had already filed a murder case against unknown accused, Sohana submitted a separate complaint before the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, prompting the judge to order an investigation by Tejgaon Police Station.
Inspector (Investigation) Nazmul Jannat Shah reported that he visited the address provided by Sohana but did not find her there, and local residents said they did not know her. Attempts to reach her through her lawyer also failed. The investigation officer submitted a final report stating that the complainant could not be located.
The complaint named former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Awami League leaders and activists from various districts, 28 people from Paligiri village, 10 journalists, and 6 police officers. After reviewing the preliminary report, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid stayed the CR case and directed Ramna Police Station to continue the investigation under the original murder case and to verify the identities of the accused listed by Sohana.
Investigators confirmed that Abdul Gani, son of Ahsan Ullah of Sonagazi, Feni, was shot dead near Banglamotor while walking to Eskaton Jame Mosque in July 2024. His body was received from Dhaka Medical College Hospital by his elder brother and buried the same night in the family graveyard. Gani’s name appears as serial 412 in the July Uprising martyr list.
Family members told police that Gani married Ayesha Akhter Popi in 2023 and that they did not file any case regarding his death. They also said they do not know the woman calling herself Sohana Akhter.
