On Tuesday, 61 women’s organizations held a cultural protest and torchlight procession in front of the National Parliament marking the International Day for the Prevention of Violence Against Women. The program, organized by the Day’s Celebration Committee, began at 4 pm with drum beats and the national anthem. Mahmuda Begum of Sabujer Abhiyan Foundation introduced the groups.

Participants marched with slogans including “Against violence against women, stand up together,” “Women’s place everywhere,” “I want to walk safely,” and “Women’s response on the streets—a new wave of awakening.” This year’s theme was “Do politics for women, fight together to prevent violence.” Bangladesh has observed November 25 since 1997, commemorating the 1960 killing of the Mirabel sisters and the day’s declaration in 1981 as a protest against violence.

Rehana Samdani read the declaration, noting women’s limited presence in political leadership and calling for a fair, safe environment for participation. Eight demands were raised: gender-equality policies in all parties, protection from violence, meaningful leadership at national and local levels, programs for marginalized women, stopping misogynistic speech, stronger digital safety, free participation in culture, and protection from intimidation.

The cultural segment included drum performances by Faria’s team, ensemble songs by working women, group dance by Mukta Thakur’s Mirror Institute, protest poems, and BRAC Popular Theater’s play “Bijayini.” Many visitors watched as banners and placards filled the area. Nurjahan of Bonhishikha thanked participants before the torchlight procession moved through Manik Mia Avenue and Khamarbari, returning to Parliament.
