Poet, writer, and political analyst Farhad Mazhar has said that the country is facing torture and oppression carried out “in the name of religion.” He made the remarks on Friday at a protest rally at the Central Shaheed Minar demanding the release of Baul artist Abul Sarkar.

Speaking at the gathering, he said that although the previous “fascist government” had been removed from power, “religious fascism” continued. He added, “Just as the people punished and expelled Sheikh Hasina, these religious fascists will also be resisted.”

Highlighting Baul traditions, he said Bauls have long used plays and folk songs to raise awareness, stating that filing a case against Abul Sarkar was not the right approach. He also said it was “sad” that groups had mobilized in the streets even after the case.

Addressing critics, he questioned their earlier silence and asked where they had stood before August 5. He warned against using religion as a political tool, saying those planning to “play the Islam card” in upcoming elections would be mistaken. He challenged claims that a Baul song could harm faith, adding that international circles were raising questions about the situation.

From the rally, Farhad Mazhar demanded the unconditional release of Abul Sarkar and called for public resistance against forces he said were pushing the country toward conflict.
