A woman in Katakhali village of Jahazmara Union, Hatia upazila (Noakhali), chained her husband to a bed after long-running family disputes and allegations of neglect. According to locals, Hasina Begum married Abdur Rahman according to village customs, and her family provided furniture as part of the marriage norms. After the marriage, quarrels reportedly began, and the husband later entered a second marriage, followed by a suspected third. Community mediations were held several times but brought no resolution.

Hasina Begum alleged that her husband had continuously mistreated her, did not provide financial support, and abandoned her after marrying again. She said she chained him “out of fear he would run away” and to demand the return of what her family had provided. Crowds gathered at the house after news spread, with people from various parts of Hatia coming to see the incident.

Abdur Rahman, speaking while chained, denied a third marriage but admitted to a second. He alleged that he had been beaten and claimed he remarried because of conflicts with his first wife. Hasina’s parents said the husband’s family had not contacted their daughter for two years, and they hoped for a social resolution once the husband’s relatives arrived.

Police said no formal complaint has been filed so far. Jahazmara Police Outpost in-charge Khorshed Alam stated that legal action would be taken if a written complaint is submitted.
