Police recovered the battered body of Sumon Khalifa (35) from the side of a road in the Madhya Narsingpur area of Fatulla, Narayanganj Sadar, on Monday morning. The body, bearing multiple sharp-weapon injuries, was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for post-mortem. Sumon, originally from Agailjhara in Barishal, was married to Baul artist Sonia Akhter and lived with her in Siddhirganj’s Mouchak area.

According to Fatulla Model Police Station, Sumon had accompanied his wife to a Baul programme at Panchabati on Sunday evening. Sonia stated that he stepped out during the night and did not return. On her way home, she was reportedly robbed at knifepoint in the Isdair area—losing money, a wallet, and gold ornaments. When she later went to Fatulla Police Station to file a complaint about the robbery, she was informed that her husband’s body had been found.

Witnesses and fellow artists said Sonia and Sumon had attended the Bangladesh Baul Artist Foundation anniversary programme at the Panchabati Baul Club, where food was distributed and artists performed. Sonia sang briefly before leaving the event. Police say Sumon’s body was found on a semi-paved road near an abandoned house, with clear signs of hacking injuries.

Narayanganj police officials, including the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations), confirmed that Sonia Akhter is being questioned as part of the investigation. Authorities noted that Sumon had divorced his previous wife before marrying Sonia about a year and a half ago. Police say all angles—including personal disputes and possible robbery—are being examined.
