Ansar members at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) arrested two women on Tuesday evening for attempting to smuggle a newborn out of the hospital. The arrested are Nahar (47) and her sister Hasina (38). They were detained in front of ward 106 while carrying a baby boy and a girl and later handed over to Shahbagh Police Station.

According to Ansar, the women had allegedly negotiated a Tk 50,000 deal with the newborn’s mother, Kamila Begum, with plans to take the child elsewhere for sale. During questioning, both women admitted involvement in offering money to vulnerable women and facilitating the sale of newborns. Kamila, who delivered a baby boy via C-section on November 29, said she had been denied access to her own child after the alleged traffickers took control.

Nahar’s son, Fahim, denied that his mother and aunt were part of a trafficking network, claiming they were only helping a “helpless, poor woman” and insisting the situation arose from a misunderstanding. He also said they run a private facility named Nahar Medical Center in Tongi’s Hossain Market.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the two women were intercepted by Ansar while attempting to leave DMCH with the infant. Shahbagh Police have launched an investigation into the alleged trafficking attempt and the activities surrounding the private medical center linked to the accused.
